2. When I first moved to Michigan, I wanted to be a
horse trainer and work at the local stables breeding the best horses for
racing. Down the road from the condo I was living in was a farm owned by Pam
Dawber and her husband, Mark Harmon. I dreamed of being a breeder on their
farm. In fact, the ranch that Mac’s father owns is based off their place in
Michigan.
3. I couldn’t be a zoologist because I’d have to
have a degree in animal biology. My college dissected fetal pigs, lampreys and
cats. I didn’t want to have to hurt an animal, even one that was already dead.
I couldn’t do it, feeling like they were killing cats just for us to experiment
on. So another career was checked off my list. (actually a whole field)
4. I grew up riding horses at the local stable. It
was only $5 to ride for an hour but since I went so often, they didn’t worry
about how long I had the horse out for. My favorite horse was Cherokee 2. I
don’t know what that meant for Cherokee 1, but my horse was the sweetest thing
and we loved to race across the field. It’s one of my favorite memories of
growing up.
5. In 1984, I attended Ohio University for the
summer while my then husband was finishing up his degree. Matt Lauer was a
speaker that year because he graduated from Ohio University. While Matt Lauer
isn’t the hard hitting journalist that many others are—going to the war zones,
the fact that he went to the same school as I did stuck with me and I knew I
wanted to write about a journalist.

EXCERPT:
After a two-hour
drive, the car slowed down in front of a tall. black iron ornamental gate. It
looked like those gates from the big Texas Hollywood TV shows. The house or
barn were nowhere in sight. It was obvious Mac came from a prestigious family,
but she couldn’t imagine growing up around all this wealth. Fortunately, Mac
had turned out well rounded, not pretentious at all.
“Are we here?” Todd
sat up straighter, looking around.
“Yes. My family’s
farm has been home for the Thomas family for decades. My parents live here now.
I can’t wait for them to meet you. We’ll drive over to the barn so we can ride.
After the ride, Mom planned a lunch.”
The anxiety in
Lauren’s stomach grew. She put her hand to her churning stomach. They’re not
squirrels anymore but gazelles leaping and running. Holding back her fears
wasn’t an option, she had to say something.
“Mac, you didn’t
mention your parents were going to be here. Isn’t this a little soon for the
meet-the-parents event? I’m not even sure they’re going to like me. I don’t
hang with the country club crowd. I’m a coupon cutter who loves shopping at
discount stores. I have money to live comfortably but I’m not extravagant. I’m
just a small-town teacher.”
Mac placed a hand
on her cheek. “My parents are going to love you. First of all, you don’t have
to be anything you aren’t for them. Dad’s still the one who cleans the barn
each day and cares for the horses. Not because he has to but because they’re a
passion of his. Mom will want to know all about your secret discounts. She
still saves and reuses her plastic baggies. They aren’t the ostentatious wealthy
people you think they are.”
Lauren let out a
deep breath. “Thank you for explaining about your family. It’s important for
them to like me if we are to have any relationship. I’m scared.” She grabbed
Mac’s hand and gave it a squeeze.
Mac returned the
gesture, smiling at her and flashing his dimples once again. “Besides, they’ll
like you because I do.”
Lauren couldn’t
stop staring at Mac’s dimples. Those little dents are going to be the way he
gets whatever he wants. I can see how things will be now.
Mac put a quick
kiss on Lauren’s cheek before punching a number into the keypad by the gate.
“Ewwww.” Todd’s
face scrunched up showing his disapproval. “Kissing’s gross.”
